Pathogenesis of Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus Infections in the Developing Chick Embryo.

چکیده
Although the Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus is readily cultivable in the developing chick embryo (Beck and Wyckoff, 1938; Kubes and Rios, 1939; Gallo and Vogelsang, 1939), no studies appear to have been made on the rate of propagation or distribution of this virus in the embryo, as has been done by Higbie and Howitt (1935) and by Bang (1943) for the Eastern and Western equine viruses. Since the Venezuelan virus, aside from being immunologically different from the other two (Beck and Wyckoff, 1938; Kubes and Rios, 1939), differs from them in being more virulent for rabbits (Lennette and Koprowski, 1943) and for mice (Lennette and Koprowski, 1943) on inoculation by the intraperitoneal route, the pathogenesis of the infection produced by the Venezuelan virus in chick embryos was investigated to ascertain whether other biologic differences exist among these viruses.

In contrast to Eastern equine encephalitis virus, the replication of Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus was strongly inhibited at 44 C in chick embryo cells. The inhibited steps were analyzed by shifting the incubating temperatures up or down, and by determining during the shifts the rate and extent of infectious ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis, intact virus synthesis, and formation of...
متن کاملThe Course of Experimental Infection of the Chick Embryo with the Virus of Equine Encephalomyelitis
The titration curve for the virus of Eastern equine encephalomyelitis inoculated into the 10 day old chick embryo shows that the maximum increase in virus content continues until shortly before the generalized destruction of the embryo is apparent. This is followed by a stationary phase. Histological studies of infected embryos fail to demonstrate selective tissue destruction, and titrations sh...

The efficacy of Formalin-inactivated Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) vaccine has been reported to be low for man. Although a live VEE vaccine has been shown to be highly effective for the protection of laboratory workers, local and systemic reactions have occurred in approximately 20% of inoculated individuals. Therefore, studies were initiated in an attempt to produce an inactivated vacci...

Experiments are presented in which the plaque assay technique was used to study the intracellular appearance and release of Western equine encephalomyelitis virus in suspensions of infected chick embryo fibroblasts. No intracellular virus could be found during the 1st hour after adsorption in spite of the fact that more than 10(14) cells per ml. proved to be infected. This is taken to indicate ...
